Chapter 13: Ottavio's Offer

The warehouse on Dyer Street stood at the end of a dead road by the water.

Santo stopped the car under a broken streetlight and switched off the engine.

"Stay here," he said.

"No."

"He asked for me alone. If he sees you, he gets what he wants for free."

"What does he want?"

"I don't know yet. That's why I'm going in."

He checked the gun at his back and looked at the two cars of his men parked behind us.

"If I'm not out in twenty minutes, they come in shooting."

"And I?"

"You drive to Luca and you don't stop for anyone."

He got out.

I waited a minute, and then I got out too.

There was a side door at the back, propped open with a paint can, and I slid through it into the dark.

The warehouse was almost empty.

Crates were stacked against one wall, and a single work light hung over a folding table at the far end.

Ottavio sat at the table in his good gray coat, with a thermos and two paper cups in front of him.

On a cot behind him, under a blanket, lay a small shape with dark curls.

I crouched behind the crates, close enough to hear every word.

"Santo," Ottavio said warmly, and stood to embrace him.

Santo did not lift his arms.

"Where is the boy?"

"Asleep. He's had a hard day." Ottavio sat down again and poured coffee into both cups. "Sit. Please. You look like you haven't slept since the Saturday."
