Chapter 32: Never Looks Back
I called the old sister back with Nathaniel still asleep upstairs and the wedding dress over the drafting stool.
"I'll cut it," I said.
"Good. Wear something that isn't black. Your mother hated you in black."
"She told you that?"
"She told everyone that."
The eleventh of October was a Saturday.
It came up bright and cold, with the maples on the South Side gone red and the sky a hard clean blue.
A year ago that night, I'd sat at a head table in a green silk gown with a man standing behind my chair.
This morning I stood on the sidewalk outside St. Agnes in a dark green coat, with a pair of big ceremonial scissors in my hand and a pencil through my hair.
The building looked the same from the street.
Red brick, three stories, the stone cross over the door.
But the windows were new, every one of them, tall and clear, and somebody had planted mums along the front walk.
Over the door, on a plain bronze plate, it said ST. AGNES HOUSE.
Under it, smaller: Mira Sartori, Architect.
A wide red ribbon ran across the top of the front steps.
There were maybe a hundred people on the sidewalk.
The trust's board, and the priest from Saint Bridget's, and a man from the city in a bad tie.
