Chapter 31: Her Own Table
I turned the envelope over.
The seal on the back was the Sabatini crest, pressed into red wax.
At the far end of the table, Renzo's mother had put her shoes back on.
She was watching me over a cannoli with no expression at all.
I slid my thumb under the wax.
The card inside said the gathering would be held on the third Saturday of October, at the hall on Staten Island, at seven o'clock.
Underneath, in the same slanted hand, someone had added one line.
Your table is set.
"Well?" my mother said.
"I'm invited."
"Of course you're invited." She looked at Renzo's mother. "What kind of table?"
Renzo's mother dabbed powdered sugar from her lip with a napkin.
"Come and see," she said.
On the third Saturday of October, I stood in front of my mother's mirror in green silk.
It was the same dress.
My mother's tailor had let it out half an inch in the waist and told me I should be proud of every bit of it.
"You're sure?" my mother said from the doorway. "Green?"
"I'm sure."
"She called it brave."
"It is brave," I said. "That's why I'm wearing it."
My mother came in and fixed the clasp on my father's cross.
