Chapter 16: Quickening
The great hall of Vaskary had never held so many people.
They sat in rows on benches down both walls, eight hundred of them, lords in velvet and ladies in jewels.
They went silent when Ysolene came in on Valerian's arm.
The King's herald stood at the high table with a sheet of parchment.
The old priest of the Fire waited on the dais beside a black iron brazier.
He had put on a red robe stiff with gold thread.
Ignatius sat in the front row with one leg crossed over the other.
Ysolene walked the length of the hall with her head high and her heart going.
Valerian led her up the three steps and let go of her hand.
"I'll be here," he said, low.
"You'd better be."
The priest raised his arms.
"We come to see if the fire answers," he said in a voice much bigger than he was.
"As it has for eleven hundred years."
"If the Duchess of Vaskary carries a child of the dragon blood, the dragon's fire will rise in her to meet it."
