Chapter 18: The Cottage
Ysolene left at dawn with the same trunk she had arrived with.
Fenna carried it down the steps herself and refused to let a footman touch it.
"You'll write," she said.
"I'm going four miles."
"You'll write anyway."
She squeezed Ysolene's hand, hard, and her eyes were red.
Ysolene didn't look up at the window of the east tower, where she knew a tall man stood with his hands on the sill.
She walked down the cliff road.
The east-road cottage had a slate roof, a crooked chimney and a garden gone to seed.
Her father opened the door in his nightshirt with a pen behind his ear.
He looked at the trunk, and at her face, and said nothing at all.
He put the kettle on.
"He's very sorry," she said, when she had sat at his table for ten minutes.
"I should imagine."
"It's no excuse."
"No."
"You're meant to be on my side."
"I am. I'm only enjoying that it's the first time in your life you've come to me with a complaint about a man's manners."
He pushed a cup toward her. "Drink your tea. The cottage is cold at night. I'll warm a brick."
