Chapter 8: Late
Ysolene sat very still with the tea going cold in her hands.
"Say nothing to him," she told Fenna.
Fenna folded her arms.
"He'll want to know, Your Grace. Any man would."
"The contract says the nights end when the physician confirms it."
"Ah," said Fenna.
"I would like to be sure first. That's all."
It was not all.
She could read the clause by heart.
Every night until it takes.
When it took, the nights would stop.
She would sit across a breakfast table from a man who had said please against her throat and now would not touch her.
She could not make herself say it yet.
"The physician comes up from Lorien on the first of the month," said Fenna. "That's nine days. You can keep a secret nine days."
"Can I?"
"Not from me," said Fenna. "From him, perhaps. He's not looking at anything but you."
That night the library was lit by one lamp.
Ysolene had gone there to look at the Vaskary family tree, which hung on the wall in a gilt frame.
It showed twenty-two dukes in unbroken line and, beside them, a long row of women whose names were written very small.
Valerian found her standing in front of it.
