Chapter 9: Confirmed
The King's physician was a small dry man who smelled of camphor and refused to look at the duke's hands.
He examined Ysolene in the morning room behind a folding screen, with the shutters closed, while Fenna held her robe.
Ignatius stood on the other side of the screen with his arms folded.
The law required a witness, said the physician, and the commissioner was the Crown's witness.
She could see his boots under the painted panel, perfectly still.
"Do I have to have him here?" she said through her teeth.
"It's his office, my lady."
"He ruined my father."
"I'm told so," said the physician, without inflection, and pressed his cold fingers to her stomach.
He asked her a dozen questions and she answered every one in a voice she did not recognize.
He asked when she had last bled.
He asked about her appetite, about the smell of tea, and about what she had noticed in the mornings.
Fenna's eyes met hers over his bent head, and she nodded.
"Well," said the physician at last, and straightened.
The room had gone silent.
