Chapter 13: The Rite
Shizuku came up out of the lake at dawn in the same white kimono she had been drowned in.
Kohaku had washed it and dried it in the hot spring and pressed it flat with her own hands.
She had cried the entire time.
"They'll want to see you as you went," Kohaku said.
"They'll see me."
"You'll look like a ghost."
"That's the idea."
Shizuku swam the last stretch alone.
Ryugen had walked her to the edge of his gate, in the grey half-light, and let go of her hand at the very last second.
He did not say goodbye.
He said, "Call."
She nodded.
Then she rose through the water with the pearl glowing at her throat.
The scale lay against her breastbone, and her dead father's ring beside it.
She hid in the reeds south of the jetty.
The whole village of Kuramizu was on the shore.
She hadn't known there were so many.
Two hundred people stood on the pebbles in their dark winter clothes, shoulder to shoulder, with the old people in front on stools.
