Chapter 16: Home
Shizuku's father's house smelled of someone else's cooking.
Her uncle had moved Chiyo's bedding into the east room, and his own good brazier into her father's.
The shrine shelf had been cleared of everything but a sake bottle.
Shizuku stood in the doorway for a long time.
Then she went to the kitchen and took her mother's iron pot down from the hook where he had left it.
She set it on the hearth and lit the fire.
She made rice.
It was the only thing she knew to do.
By noon the first woman had come to the gate.
It was the potter's wife, a tall, thin woman in her forties with a basket on her arm and a face like a shut door.
She set the basket on the step.
There was a smoked fish in it, and a jar of pickled plums, and a bundle of good charcoal.
"I told you once," she said, staring at the fence, "that no man would ever look at you twice."
"You did."
"At the harvest dance. Four years ago."
"I remember."
"I am sorry."
It was not a gracious apology.
She said it as if pulling a splinter.
Shizuku looked at the plums.
"A god looked at me twice," she said. "At least. I had it from him."
The potter's wife's mouth twitched, and then she covered her face with her hand and cried.
