They took Danjuro away in the steward's cart, with his hands tied and his mouth finally shut.
The lord's justice would have him by the new moon.
Nobody in the square said what the justice would do.
Nobody had to.
Chiyo watched the cart out of sight.
Then she turned round and said to Shizuku, "I want to go to the mill and bake something," and Shizuku said she would come.
They stood in the mill kitchen and baked forty rice buns that nobody wanted.
It was the best thing Chiyo could have done.
On the third morning the elders called the village to the square.
Shizuku went, because they asked, and Ryugen came behind her.
He walked up the street from the lake in plain grey.
The red cord was on his left horn and his tail swished at his heels.
He had not hidden his horns and tail with magic.
Two hundred people stood in the square and stared at their god.
Children peered round their mothers' skirts.
An old man dropped to his knees on the cobbles and was hauled up by his grandson.
Ryugen went white to the lips.
