Chapter 24: The Milk Churn

I pulled back from the planks.

Ailsa was already looking at me.

"Don't," she said.

"He'll pour every drop while we make a plan." I nodded at the Land Rover. "They cut that chain on the road. Find the cutters. Go round by the burn and cut Struan loose while Murdo's busy with me."

"And if Murdo's not busy with you?"

"Ailsa. When has Murdo ever not been busy with me?"

She went.

I walked round to the front of the store.

The two Strachan men by the door dropped their cigarettes.

"Evening," I said, and walked past them.

Four more Strachan men were sitting on the barley sacks with cans of beer.

Murdo turned round on the loading bank with the hammer still in his hand.

"Your Highness," he said. "Did you bring your wee pot lid?"

I didn't look at Struan. If I looked, I'd go to him.

"You split his lip," I said.

"He fell off the cart."

"Stop pouring."

"Why would I?" He nudged the cask with his boot. "Grey whisky. I told you at the gate."

"Because I'll give you what you asked for on the loch road. Set the cask up, and at the Moon Court I'll tie the cord on your wrist."
