Chapter 25: What the Huntsman Saw
The huntsman's cottage sits on the shoulder of the deer hill, below the march dyke, with its back to the wind.
Struan and I walked up to it the next morning.
He'd slept three hours on the stillhouse bench with the milk churn chained to his ankle.
Morag had laughed at that until she cried, and then she'd just cried.
His ribs were black where the Strachans had kicked him on the loch road.
He walked up the track holding them.
"You could have brought the horses," he said.
"You said you wanted the air."
"I said that before I knew there'd be this much of it."
"Six days," I said.
"Six days," he agreed. "Sober, beaten up, and walking up a mountain. You're a terrible girlfriend."
"Consort."
"Terrible consort."
I took his good hand anyway, and he let me keep it.
The cottage door opened before we knocked.
The huntsman was nearly eighty, bent and tall, in a stalker's tweed jacket gone shiny at the elbows.
He'd taught me to ride when I was six.
He looked at Struan's bruises and the cord on his wrist, and stood back from the door.
