Chapter 24: The Lock
On the ninety-sixth day Alaric did the worst thing he had done since the snowfield.
He did it at five in the morning, in the dark, in the courtyard of his own house.
The carriage stood at the foot of the steps with its curtains drawn and its lamps unlit.
It was the heavy black coach with iron-banded wheels, the one that had carried his mother north in the old war.
There were forty riders behind it, in the grey cloaks of the border guard, sitting silent on their horses in the snow.
Their captain saluted.
"The Duchess is to be brought down by the east stair, Your Grace?"
"By the back stair," Alaric said. "She'll be asleep."
"She'll be...?" the captain said.
"There is a sleeping draught in the tea the maid carried up at four." Alaric's voice did not shake. "Greta thinks it is for her headache. She'll wake in a bed at the northern fortress, with a locked door and four hundred miles of snow between her and the Banquet."
