Chapter 16: Counting
"Ten," said Lysander. "And you will count them."
He said it with his hand flat on her belly and his mouth an inch from hers.
She lay on her back in the middle of the great bed, naked in the firelight, with three pillows under her shoulders and her hair spread across them.
He knelt beside her, bare to the waist, black hair loose on his shoulders.
He looked like a man who had been given a gift and meant to unwrap it for a week.
"Ten what?" said Rosalind, who knew perfectly well.
"Ten times you come for me tonight. Out loud. You say the number each time, and if you lose count, we start again."
"That's cruel."
"It is nursing." He turned the sand-glass on the bedpost. "A good nurse knows that rest alone is not enough. The patient needs exercise."
She burst out laughing.
He silenced it with a kiss, deep and slow and wet, with one big hand cradling her jaw.
She kissed him back and pulled at his hair.
"Your pulse is eighty-eight," he said against her lips. "We have a lot of room."
"We have a lot of room."
"Then we begin."
He moved down her body.
He kissed her throat and the bruise he'd left there on the first day of her confinement, which had faded to yellow.
He kissed the soft skin between her breasts.
He took her left nipple in his mouth and sucked, and she arched under him with a sigh.
"Don't rush," she said.
"I never rush."
"You rushed in the library."
"I was a man in a library."
He drew her nipple between his teeth, rolled it with his tongue and let it go with a wet pop.
Then he did the other.
By the time he'd finished, both were tight and dark and aching, and she was squirming on the sheet.
He kissed down her belly.
He parted her knees, set his shoulders between them and looked.
"Look at you," he said. "Already shining."
"Lysander."
"One," he said, and put his mouth on her.
