Chapter 17: Snow Light
It snowed in the night, the first real snow of the winter, and by morning the lake was a sheet of pewter under a white sky.
Lysander took her to the orangery at dusk.
It stood at the back of the house, a long glass room with iron ribs, where Ardmoor's grandfather had once grown lemons in tubs.
The stove at the far end had been lit since noon.
Outside, the snow lay blue on the glass roof.
Inside, it was as warm as June, and smelled of wet earth and sharp green leaves.
"You've been busy," said Rosalind.
Someone had spread a dozen cushions on the flagstones in the middle of the floor, a great soft island of velvet and wool.
A lamp burned low in a corner.
The lemon trees stood around them.
"I wanted you somewhere I could not hear Bett," said Lysander. "And I wanted you to see the snow."
"I do see it."
"Not yet."
He took a strip of black silk from his pocket.
It was a good yard long, the lining of an old coat, hemmed on both sides.
She looked at it, and then at him.
Her heart did something quick and hot.
"I'm twenty-four years old," she said. "I'm a professional. I'm not afraid of a blindfold."
"I did not ask if you were afraid."
"Then what did you ask?"
"Nothing. I am telling you. Turn around."
She turned.
He tied the silk over her eyes, firmly, behind her head, and the world went black.
His hand rested on her shoulder for a moment, warm and steady.
"Your pulse is eighty," he said. "Good. I think you have never stopped in your whole life."
"I'm standing here, aren't I?"
"You are standing here and listening to me. It is not the same."
She felt her throat close.
He was right.
She had spent eight years watching monitors and keeping her hands busy, and now there was nothing to watch and nothing to do.
