Chapter 21: The Edict
In the morning light he wrote the edict himself.
The ink stone had been scrubbed, and the table cleared.
Tae-heon sat behind it in the plain robe he wore to read.
A fresh sheet of white paper lay pinned flat under a jade weight.
Seo-wan sat across from him with her hands wrapped around a cup of barley tea.
"I want it plain," she said. "No flowers. No 'in Our boundless mercy'."
"Then you write it."
"You're the one with the brush."
"I'm the one who is going to be told what to put."
She put the cup down.
"Begin with the name," she said. "The Women's Infirmary of the Royal Court."
He wrote it.
His characters were square and quick, and the brush never hesitated.
"Open to any woman of Joseon who passes the pulse examination, whatever her family."
He wrote that.
"A hundred beds. Women physicians, women nurses, and no man to sit at the door and count who comes in."
