Chapter 23: The Wedding Night
The Queen of Joseon sat on the edge of the bed in nine layers of red silk and said, "Kneel."
Tae-heon knelt.
He did it at once, on the floor in front of her.
He was still in his own wedding robe of crimson and gold, with the dragon on the breast.
The ceremony had lasted from dawn until the lamps were lit.
Yeon-suk had watched all of it from a chair at the back, wrapped in three blankets, and announced that the cakes were too dry.
Now the doors were shut, and the guards were sent to the far end of the corridor.
The Hall of Quiet Rest glowed red in the light of two candles.
"Take it off me," said Seo-wan.
"All of it?"
"One layer at a time. And ask first."
He looked up at her, and she saw him breathe in.
"May I take off the crown, my Queen?"
"You may."
He rose on his knees and lifted the gilded headdress off her hair, carefully.
The pins came out one by one.
Her black hair fell down her back, heavy as water.
"May I take the sleeves?"
"Yes."
He unknotted the long ribbons, and drew the wide red sleeves off her arms, and set them aside.
Beneath was another robe, green, and under it one of yellow.
He asked for each of them.
She let him.
By the fifth he was breathing hard, and by the seventh his hands shook so badly that he fumbled the knot and swore.
She let that go too.
"May I take the last?" he whispered.
"The last."
"Please."
"Ask better."
"Please let me see you, my Queen."
"I have thought of nothing else all day."
"I stood in front of the whole court and thought of this."
She smiled slowly.
"Yes."
The last layer slid to the floor.
She sat naked on the bed in the candlelight, with her hair around her shoulders and the red of the dress puddled at her feet.
