Chapter 19: Fourteen Days

"The fourteenth," Jago said again.

He was looking at the letter, but he wasn't reading it anymore.

"What's the fourteenth?"

"Our fair." He folded the letter in half, then in half again. "The cove's Midsummer fair. We hold it a week early. Always have, since the pilchard days, so the boats could go out for the real one."

"So every wolf on the Lizard will be on your quay."

"Every wolf in the South West. And their pups. And the tourists."

"And Clive wants to take it off you at noon, in front of all of them."

"He's a showman," said Jago. "I'll give him that."

The solicitor had already gone back to his car. He gave us a little wave as he drove out.

I got into the MG and held the wheel for a minute without starting it.

"Fourteen days," I said. "I've paid off worse in twenty years."

"You had twenty years."

"I had Duncan. Now I've got you."

He looked at me sideways. "Is that better or worse?"

"Ask me in fourteen days."

We drove south through the night.

At ten that night we stopped at a services near Birmingham to charge.

The car park was empty and orange under the lights. Jago bought two teas and two flapjacks and came back across the tarmac with them.

I was leaning on the car with my eyes shut.

"You rejected him," he said.

"I did."

"How do you feel?"

I thought about it.

"Light. Like I've put a bag down."

He set the teas on the roof of the car.

"I said I'd wait," he said. "I'm still waiting. I want you to know it's got a lot harder since about half past eleven this morning."

I opened my eyes.

He was standing very close, with his hands jammed in his pockets.

I took hold of his jumper and pulled him in.

He kissed me against the side of the car, hard and slow, his hands still in his pockets for about two seconds.

Then they weren't.

They were on my waist, my back, in my hair. He tasted of tea and flapjack.
