Chapter 6: Released
I wrapped the vial in a clean sock and put it in my handbag.
"Where are you going?" Paul said.
"Coldwater."
"Now? You've just come out of a heat. You look like a boiled ham."
"Thank you, Paul."
"I mean it kindly."
"I know you do. Stay here and watch the cottage."
He watched me back the MG out with his arms folded and his deckchair under one of them.
Coldwater sits on the coast, an hour north-east, on a headland above a long pale beach.
Their pack house is old stone with a slate roof. Everything about it says money that's been there a long time and doesn't need to tell you.
The Coldwater Alpha met me on the drive.
He took one look at my face and didn't ask anything.
"She's in the kitchen," he said. "She said you'd come."
"How?"
"She watched you at the ball. She said, that one will be here by Wednesday."
It was Wednesday.
The old Luna was at the kitchen table with a pot of tea and a ball of red wool.
She was tiny, ninety at least, with white hair in a bun and eyes like a blackbird.
She'd been Luna of Coldwater for fifty years. She'd been Gran to her own pack for thirty.
To the rest of us she was just the old Luna.
"Sit down, pet," she said. "Before you fall down."
I sat.
She poured me tea. Then she reached behind her into a cupboard and brought out a squat brown bottle.
"Spiced rum," she said. "A boy in Cornwall sends me one every Christmas. His father owed me money once. I never asked for it back, and he's never forgotten it."
