Chapter 17: Candidate
Todd's mother watched the video to the end.
"Heal this community," she said.
She put the phone face down on my table, the way Todd always did.
"Is anyone running against him?"
"I don't know," I said. "It's been a special election for six minutes."
She stayed for chicken, and she let Gabe show her every rock he owned, and at nine her friend picked her up.
At the door, she held my hand in both of hers.
"I'm going to want my car back," she said. "I'll handle that."
On Monday morning, someone knocked on my door at eight-fifteen.
It was the room parent who'd started the third-grade group chat back in August.
She was in her forties, with a Brookside Swim hoodie, a minivan running at my curb and twin boys arguing in the back of it.
"I have four minutes before the bell," she said. "Run."
"Run where?"
"For board president. Against him."
I laughed.
She didn't.
"No," I said.
"Why not?"
"I'm a bookkeeper. I have a business and a kid and a fund that's four thousand dollars short."
