Chapter 31: The Ledger
"We'll take it," I said.
"You're sure? I know it's short notice."
"I'm sure. Send me the confirmation in writing."
"Of course," she said, and I could hear her smiling. "They told me you'd say that."
I hung up.
Beau was propped on one elbow, looking at me with his hair flat on one side.
"Four days," I said.
"What do you need?"
"Twenty-four new permission slips. A hotel that can move a night. Four chaperones who can take two days off work by Thursday."
"Three," he said. "You've got one."
"And the room parent."
"So two."
"And me."
"Then you need one," he said, and got up to make coffee in my kitchen like he'd always made it there.
By ten I was at the kitchen table with my laptop, my phone and the ledger.
By ten-thirty the hotel had moved us, after I read the manager the date we'd booked, the date we'd paid, and the date of the email confirming both.
By noon the room parent had texted all twenty-four families.
By three, twenty-three slips had come back signed, photographed on twenty-three kitchen tables.
