Chapter 21: Seren
"No," I said. "No, no, no."
Mam took the empty oilcloth out of my hands and turned it over.
It wasn't.
"Seren," Mam said quietly.
"She wouldn't."
"Her books are stacked, Linnet. That girl's never stacked a book in her life. That's somebody saying goodbye."
I was already on my feet.
"Get Ilvar," I said. "Tell him to bring his guards to the bridge. Don't let them touch her."
"Where are you going?"
"To find her before somebody else does."
I found her on the white bridge.
She was halfway across, alone, standing at the rail in the snow with her blanket round her shoulders, looking down at the black water.
My heart stopped.
"Seren."
She turned round. Her face was red and wet and swollen.
"Don't come closer," she said. "Please. I'm not going to jump. I just can't look at you."
"Then don't look at me. I'm coming anyway. I'm nearly six months pregnant on an icy bridge. If you run, I'll have to chase you, and it'll be your fault if I fall."
She made a sound that was half a sob and half a laugh.
I walked up and stood beside her at the rail. Not touching her.
The snow came down between us.
"You gave it to him," I said.
"Yes."
"Why?"
She wiped her face with the corner of the blanket.
"He sent for me after the council. To his office. He had my father's note on the desk. The whole debt, with interest." Her voice shook. "He said it falls due at Midwinter, and if it's not paid, my father goes to the debtors' cells under the old palace. They're cold, Linnet. People die down there. My father coughs every winter."
