Chapter 27: Rushford Again

I looked at him for a long time across the torn paper.

The whole court was watching. Rushford was watching.

My son had fallen asleep against my chest.

"Good," I said.

Something went across Ilvar's face, fast.

"Because I'm going home," I said. "To Rushford. With them. And I don't want anybody holding me to anything ever again. Not even you."

"I understand."

"No, you don't. Not yet." I shifted the baby on my arm. "I said I'm going home. I didn't say you can't come and knock on the door."

He went very still.

"Like a suitor," I said. "Who has to ask. And might get told no."

The corner of his mouth moved.

"I've never been told no in my life," he said. "Before you."

"Then you're well out of practice."

Behind me, I heard Mam blow her nose very loudly.

They took Corvan north in a cart, in chains, with the captain riding behind it under guard.

Aurelia rode in a closed sleigh with the curtains drawn.

I went the other way, three miles south, with my mother and my children and half the town carrying cradles.

The Heart Tree's shoot had grown as tall as a man by the time we left the hollow.
