Chapter 4: The Star Chapel
They found me a dress.
It was pale blue silk, with a hundred tiny crystals sewn down the bodice, and it had been made for somebody two inches taller and a lot less pregnant.
Two maids pinned me into it at dawn without saying one word to me.
They talked to each other plenty.
"Half-blood," one whispered. "You can tell by the ears. They're so small."
"Like a cat's."
"I can hear you," I said. "Half-blood ears work fine. Mind the pin, that's my ribs."
They didn't speak again.
The Star Chapel was a round white room with a glass roof, so the light poured straight down on the altar.
Every seat was full.
The court had come to a hanging.
I walked up the aisle alone, because Mam was two days south and I didn't know a single other soul in Starhold.
The whispers followed me.
"Trapped him."
"Three, they say. Like a litter."
"The Marrin girl must be furious."
The Marrin girl sat in the front row in white and gold.
Corvan sat beside her with his hands folded, rings shining.
Ilvar waited at the altar.
He wore white, with silver embroidery up the sleeves, and his hair was loose down his back.
He watched me walk the whole way, and he didn't look at anyone else once.
The priestess was ancient and in a hurry. She read the vows off a scroll in a flat voice.
"Do you, Linnet Merrow, take this man?"
"I do," I said. "For a year."
Somebody in the third row choked.
The priestess turned to Ilvar.
"Do you, Ilvar Vael, Prince of Starhold, take this woman?"
"I'd like to say my own words," Ilvar said.
The priestess looked like he'd asked to set the altar on fire.
"Your Highness, it isn't customary..."
"I know."
He turned to me.
The light from the glass roof fell on his hair.
