Chapter 11: Nineteen Wolves

Quinton came at sunrise, and he did not come alone.

I heard the trucks first.

Then I heard the boots on the iron bridge, and then I heard a sound I had never heard from him in four years.

It was a roar.

Keith was already dressed.

He stood at the cabin door with his hand on the frame and looked at me.

"Stay inside," he said.

"No."

"Isla."

"It's my name he's shouting."

He didn't argue.

We walked out onto the bridge together.

Quinton stood at the far end with his shoulders hunched and his eyes gone dark gold.

Forty of his guard stood behind him.

Maud was not with them.

"I felt it," he said, and his voice was rough. "Last night. Through the bond. I felt you let him."

My face went hot.

"Quinton."

"I felt every second of it." He pointed at Keith. "You put your hands on my mate."

"She isn't your mate tonight," Keith said quietly. "She told you that on the porch."

"She's my mate until the Moon Goddess says otherwise."

"Then ask the Moon Goddess why you let her bleed alone."

Quinton charged across the bridge.

He swung a fist at Keith's jaw.

Keith took the swing on his forearm and stepped inside it, and put Quinton on his back on the iron in one move.

I heard the air leave Quinton's chest.

He rolled and came up on one knee, and he swung again.

It was a wild punch.

It had no weight in it.

I had watched Quinton break a table with his bare hand once, in the Hall, in front of the pack.

This was not that man.

His second punch glanced off Keith's shoulder, and his third missed completely.
