Chapter 19: You Left

Quinton stayed on his knees in front of the broken stone.

The pack had gone quiet around him.

His hands were open on the floor, and they were shaking.

"It's leaving me," he said. "Isla, I can feel it going."

"I know."

"The strength, the wolf. All of it."

"It was never yours," I said. "It was my father's. Your mother took it."

He lifted his head, and his face was wet.

"I didn't know," he said. "I swear to you on my brother's grave. I never knew what she did."

"I believe you."

"Then you know I'd never have let her."

"Quinton." I kept my voice level. "You let her do everything else."

He bowed his head.

For a while he did not speak.

Then he got to his feet with one hand on the head table, slowly, his face gone old.

"Take it," he said.

"Take what?"

"All of it. The Hall, the lands, the Dunstan name, the Alpha's chair. It's yours. I'll sign anything the Council puts in front of me."

"It's already mine."

"Then take me as well."

I stared at him.

"I'll be whatever you want," he said, in a cracked rush. "Your guard, your clerk, your servant. I'll sleep on the floor of your rooms. I'll never ask you for anything. Just don't cut the bond, Isla. Please."

Every wolf in the Hall was watching.

I felt Keith behind me, very still, not touching me.

He had said he would not speak for me, and he was keeping it.

"You think the Hall is what I want from you," I said.

"I don't know what you want."
