Chapter 13: The Last Breath
Bae dressed Hyeon in white hemp, because there was no time to send for the mourning silk.
Seok-woo tied the belt.
His hands knew the knot by now, and they did not shake, although everything under his ribs did.
Hyeon stood very straight, his arms out and his eyes on the lattice door.
His lip had scabbed over black, and a bruise the color of a plum stone lay along his cheekbone where Seok-woo's knuckles had landed.
"Shall I cover it?" Bae whispered, holding a pot of powder.
"No."
"Highness..."
"Let them think I struck the floor in grief."
Hyeon turned his head and looked at Seok-woo once.
"Walk three paces behind me. Whatever you see, keep a servant's face."
"Yes, Your Highness."
Hyeon's mouth twitched, and then he went out into the corridor, past Min's guards.
They let him pass because they had no order yet to do otherwise.
The King's chamber smelled of camphor and old sickness.
He lay on the great bed with his hands crossed and his beard combed, a small grey man who had looked large on the throne.
The ministers knelt in rows on the floor, wailing in the proper order.
At the foot of the bed sat the Queen Dowager, ancient and upright.
