Chapter 14: The Cell
They put Seok-woo in the lowest cell of the Office of Inspection, where the stone was always wet.
The iron on his wrists was a hand wide.
They chained him upright to a ring in the wall, with his robe cut away to the waist and his feet in straw.
They left no lamp.
It was a place built to teach a man the exact length of the night.
He used it to count the soldiers' footsteps in the passage.
Four on the stair, one at the door, and a turnkey who coughed.
He did not think about Hyeon on the floor with his hair in his face, shouting for Bae.
He thought about it only about once every breath.
Some hours later the coughing stopped.
There were voices, low, and the chink of something heavy being put into a hand.
"Take it."
"Highness, the Councillor..."
"Is not here. I am. Take it, go and find something to drink, and when you come back you will not remember my face."
A key turned.
The door opened on a hooded lantern and a figure in a plain grey coat, a servant's cap pulled low.
The figure shut the door behind him and set the lantern on the floor.
He pushed the cap off.
Seok-woo had never seen anyone so pale and so alive.
"Hyeon."
"Be quiet."
Hyeon crossed the cell in three steps and put both hands on Seok-woo's face.
His palms were icy.
He kissed Seok-woo with his whole mouth open, desperately.
Seok-woo kissed him back as well as the chains allowed.
"You're mad. If they find you here..."
"They won't."
"You're not the kind of man who can bribe a turnkey."
