Chapter 19: The Gate

Hyeon went to the gate alone, as the message asked.

He went in his white hemp, on foot, without a hat, down the middle of the empty avenue that led to the east wall.

Seok-woo let him get a hundred paces ahead.

Then he and Bae turned off the avenue and ran.

The Councillor's house lay outside the gate, behind a wall of black tile.

A long low storehouse stood at its back, where grain was kept in winter.

The window above it was barred.

There were four men in the yard, two at the stair, and one up on the wall with a bow.

Seok-woo held his father's sword.

It was heavier than he remembered, and balanced.

When he slid it out of its sheath in the dark, it made a sound he had not heard in five years.

"Young master," Bae whispered. "You haven't held a blade since..."

"I know."

"The first man will come at your left."

"How do you know?"

"I was a cook in the garrison for eleven years. I watched your father drill you every morning."

The first man came at Seok-woo's left.

Seok-woo turned the blow on the flat of his blade and put the point through the man's shoulder, and he fell without a sound.

The second shouted.

The third swung high, and Seok-woo stepped under it and drove his elbow into the man's face.

The fourth had his sword half out of the sheath when the pommel hit him behind the ear.
