Chapter 10: Slower
On the fifth night Ilarion wrote a letter.
He sat at the table with the stub of charcoal and the last margin of the drainage book.
He wrote slowly, with his scarred brow bent.
Iseult watched him from the bed.
"Who is it for?" she said.
"A woman in Hallen Vale. Her son was a corporal in my second company. He died of a fever last month."
"You write to all of them?"
"Every one. I've written three hundred and four."
He signed it, blew on the charcoal, and folded the page small.
"Why?"
"Because someone should say the name."
She got out of the bed in her chemise and went around behind his chair.
She laid her arms around his neck and her cheek against the top of his head.
He covered her hands with one of his.
"Tell me what you want," said Iseult. "Tonight. Anything at all."
"I want you to ride me," he said. "Slowly. On my terms."
"Your terms."
"You'll do exactly what I say. If you move before I tell you, I'll stop."
"I thought you wanted me to be good."
"I want you to be mine."
A shiver went all the way down her.
He stood, took her hand, and led her to the bed.
He lay back against the pillows in his shirt, with his trousers open.
