Chapter 15: The Creek
The creek ran cold and clear under the moon, and Aoi stood in it up to her thighs with her skirt gathered in her fist.
Sixty sacks had crossed the boundary stone that afternoon.
The elves of Aelwyn had paid in silver and a long look at the man who carried the first one.
Nobody had spoken his name.
Nobody had needed to.
Now the cart was tied up on the bank, the pony was asleep, and the trees on the far side were black and still.
"You are shivering," Caelrin said.
"It's cold."
"Then come here."
He stood behind her in the water, bare to the waist, with the moon on his shoulders and his hair loose and silver.
She leaned back against his chest.
His arms came around her, and his hands spread over her stomach.
The heat of him against her back was a shock after the creek.
"Your heart is going fast," she whispered.
"Yours is faster."
"Today you walked back into your own forest."
"I walked to the edge of it," he said into her hair. "And you held my hand the whole way. I did not know I needed that."
She turned her head and kissed his jaw, along the thin pale scar.
His hands slid up under her wet shirt and found her breasts.
Her nipples were hard from the cold and he rolled them between his fingers until she moaned.
"Louder," he murmured. "There is no one for a mile."
"Is that a command?"
"It is a hope."
"Then I'll make it a command," she said, and turned around in his arms. "Kiss me. Kiss me like you mean it."
He did.
He kissed her with water running down both their faces and his hands tangled in her hair, and the creek lapped at her knees.
She pulled her shirt over her head and let it float away.
He caught it, and tossed it on the bank.
Then he kissed her throat and the slope of her shoulder, and went lower, and drew a nipple into his mouth and sucked hard.
