Chapter 12: Chapter Twelve
Benedict turned from the window.
"What did you say?"
"The twelfth," I said fast. "Of... something. I don't know. I have a bad feeling."
He looked at me for one long second.
Then he said, "You're not coming up to seventy-nine."
"Of course not," I said.
I lied.
By sundown I had done four things.
I'd called Brant and told him to bring two wolves and stand in the stairwell of the seventy-ninth floor without being seen.
He hadn't asked why.
"You're not using the Debt of the Moon favor," he said.
"No. This is just a favor."
"Then I'll be there in an hour."
I'd made Birdie fetch the pack healer's last six bottles of moonwort tincture, and carry them up to seventy-nine in a cooler with ice packs.
It had slowed the poison the night he collapsed at the bonfire.
I hoped it could slow it again.
I'd put on running shoes.
And I'd told Benedict at the vault door, with a kiss and a straight face, that I would be on the sixty-first floor, knitting.
He believed me.
He locked the steel door behind him at 6:41 p.m., and the deadbolt slid home.
At 11:28, I was sitting on the corridor floor in the dark, with my back against the vault, a thermos of cocoa on one side and the cooler of tincture on the other.
Brant sat ten feet away on the stairwell step with his arms on his knees.
Neither of us had said anything for an hour.
"You know something," he said, finally.
"I know a lot of things."
"That's what I'm afraid of."
At 11:32, the fire alarm went off on the floor below.
At 11:34, the elevator doors opened and a man in a gray maintenance jumpsuit walked out pushing a cart, straight toward the vault.
