Chapter 20: The Tunnels

Lisle House was a limestone mansion on Lincoln Park West with a wrought-iron fence and every window lit.

I walked up the front steps at eleven on the twentieth of December, alone, in running shoes and a black dress.

My phone was taped inside my coat, recording.

A butler offered to take my coat, and I kept it on.

"This way, Miss Haverty."

The drawing room had white sofas, a grand piano, and a fire.

Dorothea sat by the fire in a grey cashmere dress with her pearls and a glass of something dark.

Birdie sat in a straight-backed chair in the middle of the rug with her hands tied behind her.

She was in a green cardigan, with her glasses crooked and a bruise on her cheek.

"Duck," she said. "I told her you wouldn't come."

"I'm very sorry."

"I'm not. Look at her face."

Dorothea smiled.

"She has been a delight. She tells me I have the posture of a person who hates her mother."

"She's usually right."

"Sit, dear."

I sat on a white sofa.

I could feel the whole house listening, the enforcer in the doorway, the two men on the stairs, the butler who hadn't left.

"I'll be brief," Dorothea said.
