Chapter 6: The Nurse

Chapter six of His Moonmarked Mate was called "Silver in the Dark," and it started at 10:40 p.m. behind Mercy Lakeshore Hospital.

I had it memorized, because I had hate-read it.

The Alpha gets stabbed by Court hunters.

His wolves carry him into the ER, bleeding on the linoleum.

The ER nurse, a brown-braided woman named Lena Forsberg, sews him back together.

Their eyes meet across the gurney, and the whole book clicks into place.

I had spent ten days trying to decide whether to let that happen.

On the tenth night, at nine, I stood in the tower garage and told Benedict I needed to go to the hospital.

"You're ill?" he said instantly.

"My wrist. It's been bothering me since the fever."

He studied my face.

Then he told the driver to take Birdie and me, and to wait at the door.

He did not ask a single question.

I should have found that more suspicious than I did.

Mercy Lakeshore smelled like floor wax and burnt coffee.

Birdie took a seat in the waiting room with her knitting and said, "I'll be here, Duck. Try to look sick."

"I am sick."

"Look more sick."

The triage nurse took my name.

A woman in navy scrubs came through the swinging door a minute later with a clipboard.

She had a long brown braid over one shoulder and the tired smile of someone who had been on her feet for ten hours.

"Cassia? I'm Lena. Wrist, right? Let me see."

I held it out, and she turned it over under the light.

She didn't ask about the silver crescent.

Her thumb stopped on it, and then she rubbed her own left wrist with her other hand, absent.
