Chapter 8: The Leash

By evening the whole school knew that Sabrina Strake had gone to the infirmary with a burned wrist.

Posy came back from dinner with the full story and a plate of cake she had stolen for me.

"She says you attacked her," Posy said, sitting on my bed. "She says you cheated with a heat charm. Half the wolves believe her."

"She had her claws at my throat."

"I know. I was there. Shadow-walkers stand in the back and nobody sees us." She pushed the plate at me. "I told two people what I saw. They looked at me like I'd said it was raining cake."

"Did anyone say anything to the dean?"

"The dean has called a hearing for Friday." Posy hesitated. "Bram asked her to hold it. Then he asked for your file."

I put the fork down.

"My file."

"Your admission file. He wanted to know who sent your crest." She picked at a thread on my blanket. "I figured you knew."

I hadn't.

My arm was wrapped in white gauze where Sabrina's claws had opened it, and it throbbed quietly in time with my pulse.

I got up and put my blazer on.

"Where are you going?" Posy said.

"To have a conversation," I said, "within ten paces."

The wardens' office was at the end of the west corridor, behind a door with a silver pin set in the frame.

I did not knock.
