Chapter 9: Terms and Taunts

"Your father paid for my crest," I said.

"I don't know that."

"It's his seal. It's his wax." I held up the sheet. "Somebody wanted me kept hidden until I turned eighteen, and then somebody wanted me here."

Bram crossed the room in four strides and stopped a careful arm's length away.

"I'll ask him," he said.

"No."

"Mira."

"If you ask him, he'll know I've read it," I said. "He'll know what I found. Tell me you won't."

He looked at the letter for a long time.

"I won't," he said finally. "Not until we know why."

"Say it as a term."

"Term," he said. "I don't speak to my father about you."

I folded the page and put it back in the envelope, and pushed the folder into his hands.

"Then we're even on one thing," I said. "Now the other. You were two paces behind me on the stair. You were in a storm and out of range. You broke the ten paces yourself, twice, and you're the one who made the rule."

"Both times to keep you safe."

"Both times you broke your own terms," I said. "You told me to stay away from you in the boathouse. You said I was mistaking being warm for being wanted."

His eyes dropped to my mouth.

"I said a lot of things in that boathouse."

"You said I wanted my power admired. You said it so I'd leave."

"It worked."

"No," I said. "It didn't."
