Chapter 11: The Night Before
The moths were gone by dusk.
I watched seven small grey bodies leave my chamber on the Regent's order.
I shut the door behind them and turned the key.
Emrys was already standing at the foot of my bed.
I had never put my own bed in the way of anything before, and I noticed that he'd stopped a yard short of it.
"It's my bed," I said.
"I know."
"Technically, it's my bed in my room, with my sheets, which Hob changed."
"I read the clause again." His mouth moved. "I read it with a lawyer's eye. It's yours."
"Then why are you standing there like a man at a grave?"
"Because tomorrow she's going to ask me something," he said, "and I think I know what it is."
I crossed the room and put both hands on his chest.
"She'll ask whether you've lain with the Witness."
"Yes."
"And if you say yes, nobody in the Hills will trust a word I say again."
"Every ruling I've made goes down as your gift to your lover, and the Treaty names me a bought Witness."
