Chapter 7: The Hounds
The first thing I heard was Hob, shouting in a voice I'd never heard him use.
I was in the corridor with my notebook, and the kitchen door at the end was shaking in its frame.
Something heavy hit it from the other side, and I started to run.
The kitchens of the Thorn Court are a long vaulted cave full of copper pots and the smell of baking.
Hob stood on top of the big table with a rolling pin held in both fists.
Below him, circling the table legs, were nine Hounds.
They were as tall as my hip, pale as milk, with ears the colour of fresh blood and mouths full of teeth.
The oldest bitch had her nose in the bread.
"They were let out at noon," Hob said, through his teeth. "Nobody let them out."
Casimir Marrow leaned in the opposite doorway with his arms folded.
