Chapter 12: Seal of the Keep

They did not wait for the sleigh.

Tavish took Wynne's hand and walked her through the snow to the Council Hall, with his twelve black-coated soldiers falling in behind them.

People came out of doorways to watch.

The thread blazed gold between their wrists the whole way.

"You don't have to speak," Tavish said, at the foot of the steps.

"I know."

"You don't have to do anything. I'll take the Chancellor's hall by force if it comes to that."

"Four hundred men are disarmed. A fight is how he wins." She squeezed his fingers. "Let me do the part I'm good at."

"Which part is that?"

"The part with the ink."

He looked at her for a moment, and the corner of his mouth moved.

"Go on, then."

The Council sat in full session.

The Chancellor was in the tallest chair with a paper in front of him, and Lorcan stood at his shoulder in a fresh bandage.

Sabine sat in the gallery in white fur, with a small, satisfied smile.

"Warden Morrow," the Chancellor said. "We were about to send for you."

"You sent men to my Keep with my seal."

"Your seal, signed by the Council, on an order of recall," the Chancellor said.

"A Warden who sleeps in the capital with a woman he cannot wed has abandoned his post."

He folded his hands.

"The Keep is held in trust by my cousin, pending the wedding."

"The order is forged," Tavish said.

"A serious charge."

"Then let it be examined."

"By whom?"

Wynne stepped forward.

"By me," she said.

The Chancellor smiled. "The clerk."

"The spellwright."

She went to the table and put her hand on the order.
