The old mint on Candle Street had a roof and a floor of black and white stone.
By ten o'clock on the first morning, every bench in it was full.
Spellwrights stood along the walls and in the doorway, and more stood in the street in the snow, because the word had gone round.
Over the great door hung the oak plank, new gold letters shining.

Wynne stood at the front in the green wool gown with her hair pinned up and a steel ring on her hand.
Her palms were damp.
"You're breathing very loudly," Pippa said, at her elbow.
"I'm not."
"You're counting the rafters."
"There are nineteen," Wynne muttered.
Pippa gave her a shove, and she walked up to the long table at the head of the hall.
Someone had laid out the Queen's charter on it, thick cream paper and a red seal.
Beside it lay a plain old notebook, the school one, the pages soft from handling.
