Chapter 21: The Lie Costs

The grey-cropped elder opened the ledger under the torches and turned the pages with two fingers.

She stopped at one, and she read it silently, and her jaw worked.

"This is my aunt's hand," she said. "I knew her. She never wrote a thing she didn't mean."

She looked up.

"Conrad Dunleavy. There was never a vote."

He stared at her.

"You told your wife the elders had already counted a death sentence against an untrained white wolf. I have sat on this council for thirty years. No such vote has ever been taken, and no such law has ever been written."

A murmur ran around the ring.

"The law says a white wolf is raised by the council," she said. "Taught, fed, protected. It has said so since before your grandfather was born."

"That isn't what I was told," Conrad said.

"No. It's what you told her."

Lorna covered her mouth.

I looked at her across the torches, and I saw that she hadn't known that either.

For six years she had given up her daughter to a vote that never existed.

My throat closed, and I turned my face away from her.

The elder passed the ledger to the man beside her, and he read his own page and passed it on.

"Forty thousand dollars," said a younger elder, holding up a bank slip the technician's men had brought. "From the pack's building fund. Signed by the Alpha."
