Chapter 6: Mate

"Don't," I said. "Don't say that word to me."

"It's what this is."

"It's what you want it to be, because I'm the only thing that keeps you alive."

He put his hand over his mouth and breathed out slowly.

When he took it away, his eyes were grey again, but his color was better than it had been all night.

"Sit down," he said. "Let me wrap that."

"I can do it myself."

"You can. Let me."

I sat on the edge of the desk and held out my wrist.

He took gauze from the kit and cleaned the cut, and I watched his hands work.

They were steady now.

"A mate bond is not a hunger," he said. "I know the difference. I've had the Hollow for three years, and I know what it's like to want blood."

"And what do you want from me?"

"All of it," he said.

The gauze went around my wrist twice, and he tied it off.

I thought about the lobby, and the way he had stopped walking.

I thought of him sitting in a car outside my building for two weeks.

"You found out I was W4 two weeks ago," I said. "You said you followed me to learn who I was."

"Yes."

"Did you know I was your mate then?"

"No. I knew it in the clinic, when you stood up."

"So for two weeks, I was a vial."

He didn't answer, and the silence was answer enough.

I took my wrist back.

"That's what I thought."

"Willa, it isn't--"

"You're engaged. Your fiancée's family threw me out. Your whole pack thinks I'm a beggar, and the only thing you ever asked me for was a pint of blood a week."
