Chapter 22: Believed
The match struck, and Gu Chen woke.
He had been six days in a glass case, thinning, saying eight names to himself each night, and by the sixth he had lost his hands.
Now a flame stood in the brass and he had a chest again, and a promise.
If the candle was lit, he was to break the glass.
He gathered what he had and heard Ye Ming's voice outside the cracked pane, plain and level, giving a woman her daughter's candles.
He listened to the bank clerk's mother weep.
He listened to the shellfish brothers.
He stopped gathering, because he wanted to hear the rest.
Then Ye Ming said, "My name is Ye Ming. I'm a fraud."
Gu Chen understood at once what that cost.
Ye Ming had told three hundred people that he had never heard a word from the dead.
They might believe it, and then the eight sentences were his invention too, and the sentences were all that held Gu Chen to the world.
That was the lesser fear.
The greater was that they would turn on the man in the spotlight with a dead microphone.
"No," said Gu Chen, and had no voice.
He had begged for a rule, and it had made him a man.
He had not asked what it would cost the one who gave it.
