Chapter 24: Tell Me Where You're Going
"Tea shop," Ye Ming called from the doorway, with his coat half on. "Back by noon."
"Noted," said Gu Chen from the window.
He stood in his usual place in the gray morning light, a tide table in one hand and a cup of cold tea in the other.
The tea was Ye Ming's.
He had been holding it a long while to keep it warm.
"High water before noon," he added. "Don't take the lower stairs at the ferry. The weed is slippery."
"Yes, Inspector."
Ye Ming crossed the room, took the cup, and kissed him quickly on the mouth.
It was a habit now, like the rest.
The first rule had become Tell me where you're going.
Now it was only a sentence they said at doors.
The flat smelled of tea, and no longer of damp.
Gu Chen was warm all day, in sun and rain, and cold only at the cuffs, where the harbor still got in.
The families came to the pier at dusk, one or two at a time, and said a name.
They stood at the bracket with a cup of tea or a bowl of rice and said what they had come to say, and the candle bent.
The bureau had put up a brass plaque under the lamp.
It gave the names, the date, and the number sixty.
Ye Ming went down four flights and out into the street.
Behind the market, where the old Hall's tea shop had stood, a narrow room had come up for rent.
