Chapter 22: The Locker Room
The locker room was loud with eighty men in various states of dress, and it went quiet one row at a time.
Coach Kestner stood on the long bench under the team crest with a printed page in his fist.
He saw Tanner in the doorway, and his voice never wavered.
"Thurmond is not part of this team," Coach said. "Security can walk him out."
"Let him talk, Coach," Rory said.
Rory stood up from his locker, enormous and half dressed, with his arms hanging.
"He's got a locker in here. He's still got our numbers."
"Sit down, Kane."
"No."
A captain in the second row stood up beside him, and then another.
Coach Kestner's jaw worked.
"Five minutes," he said. "Say it and go."
Tanner walked to the middle of the room.
He did not climb on anything.
"I'm not here to take the job from Shane," he said. "I'm here because you ought to know what you're being asked to follow."
"Coach will tell you I'm hurt, and I am, a little. Coach will tell you I quit, and I didn't."
