Chapter 8: Turn-Out

Jess's POV

On the eighth morning the sun came out for good, and the bulls had to be turned out with the cows.

"It's the middle of June," Dutch explained, as he saddled a gray mare for me in the barn aisle.

"The cow herd's been waiting a week on the high pasture because of the flood. They're ready to be bred. So are the bulls."

"They don't need your help," Nels said.

"They need a gate opened," said Dutch.

I stood holding the mare's cheek strap, and I thought about how I had slept four hours in Ruth's bed and woken with Emmett's arm across my waist.

Every muscle in me ached in a way I liked.

There was a bruise the shape of Nels's thumb on my left thigh.

Dutch had left a mark on my shoulder with his teeth, and I kept touching it.

I had meant to tell them the truth that morning.

I had rehearsed it in the shower, with the cold water running: my name, the lawyer, the ranch.
