Chapter 9: The Calving Pen
The calving pen was deep in clean straw, with a pole gate and a lantern on a nail, and by the time the third man shut the barn door I was already on my knees in the middle of it.
I had pulled off my boots at the gate.
I had pulled off my shirt next, and my jeans, and they stood around me in a ring, Emmett and Dutch and Nels, with their hats in their hands, looking down.
Nobody had said a word in the aisle.
"Take them off," I said.
"All of it."
Emmett unbuttoned his shirt first.
Dutch did it clumsily, in a hurry, and Nels simply stripped, without a flicker of shyness.
Three bodies came out of the work clothes in the lamplight.
Emmett was lean and hard and gray at the chest.
Dutch was huge and pale and soft in the middle, with thick legs.
Nels was wiry and brown to the collar line, with an old rodeo scar crossing his ribs.
All three of them were hard.
I looked at each of them in turn, and my mouth watered.
"I've never done this," I said.
"I want to do it right."
"There's no right," Emmett said.
His voice was thick.
"Come here, then. All of you."
They came.
I took Dutch in my left hand and Nels in my right.
Emmett stood in front of me, and I leaned forward and took him in my mouth.
I could hear the three of them breathing.
It was the loudest thing in the barn.
I moved my hand on Dutch, long and slow, and my other hand on Nels, short and firm, and my mouth on Emmett, and I felt each of them tense in turn.
"Christ," Nels said.
"Look at her."
"I'm looking," Emmett said.
His hand came down in my hair and held it gently back from my face.
"Easy, honey," Dutch said.
"Don't hurry for us."
