Chapter 11: The Offer

The Gaskell house sat on twenty acres on the east side of the valley.

It was a big log place with a three-car garage and elk antlers over the door.

Boyd's white Ford was not in the drive.

I checked the front grille anyway as I walked past the garage window.

Chrome guard.

Jarrett opened the door before I knocked.

He'd shaved again and put on the blue sweater I'd bought him two Christmases ago.

"You came," he said.

"You said dinner."

"Boyd's at the Council office. Mirabel's at the hospital till ten." He smiled. "It's just us."

That was the idea.

I'd told Stellan where I was going.

He'd gone completely silent on the phone for a moment, and then said, "Text me every half hour or I'm coming through the door."

I'd said, "As a wolf?"

He'd said, "However I fit."

Jarrett had cooked, or somebody had cooked and he'd warmed it.

Steak.

The good wine.

Candles on a table long enough for twenty.

He pulled my chair out for me.

He'd never pulled my chair out in seven years.

"I was cruel to you," he said, pouring. "In the basement. I know that."

"You were."

"Mirabel wanted it done in front of people. Boyd thought it would look stronger." He looked at his glass. "I should have done it privately."

"You should have done it six years ago."

He laughed.

"There she is."

I ate a bite of steak and didn't taste it.

"What do you want, Jarrett?"

He leaned toward me across the corner of the table.

"I need Mirabel at the full moon. Boyd's votes come with her. That's politics, that's not my heart."

"Okay."

"But you could still be mine."

I put my fork down.

"After I'm Alpha, nobody asks where I sleep. You'd have a house. A nice one. Your little clinic, rebuilt, with a budget. You'd never work a night shift again."

"And Mirabel?"

"Mirabel knows how things work."

"And the bond? I don't have it with you anymore."

"Bonds can come back." His eyes went to my throat. "Mine's still there. Some of it. I can still smell where it used to be on you."
