Chapter 25: The Man Who Rejected Me

I was at the steel door pounding on it with both fists.

"Open it."

The enforcer on the other side didn't answer.

"He's bleeding out on concrete. I'm the only surgeon in this valley who isn't throwing up. Open the door."

Nothing.

Then I heard feet on the stairs.

Lots of them, fast, in sneakers.

"Where is she?"

I knew that voice.

It was the night nurse who'd laughed at Mirabel in the lobby.

"Beta's orders," the enforcer said. "Nobody..."

"I put a line in your son at two this morning," another woman's voice said. "I held the bucket. You want to tell me about orders?"

There was a silence.

Then keys.

The door swung open.

Three night nurses stood in the hall in their scrubs, out of breath.

Behind them was the enforcer, a big tired man with a key ring in his hand, not looking at me.

"Go on, Doc," he said to the floor. "I didn't see you."

I ran.

Main Street, four blocks, in borrowed sneakers and yesterday's scrubs.

Jarrett was on a gurney in the trauma bay when I got there.

The same bay.

The same lights.

Stellan was standing over him with both hands pressed on a wad of gauze under his nephew's ribs, his forearms red to the elbow.

A cooler sat on the floor by his feet.

"Forty doses," he said without looking up. "Got here at eight. He's losing it fast."

Jarrett's eyes were open.

His lips were the color of putty.

He found my face and tried to say something.

"Don't talk," I said. "Lucille's not here, so you'll have to do what I say the first time."

I took over the gauze.

Stellan's hands came away and I felt his heartbeat jerk, hard, under my ribs.

The wound was in the belly, high on the right, under the ribs.
