Chapter 13: The Council
The Mirror Hall had no windows.
It had a floor of black stone and nine hundred bronze mirrors set into the walls, so that everyone who entered saw themselves a thousand times from a thousand sides.
Yanzhi did not like it.
His own face kept turning up in corners, pale, with its gold eyes held down.
The Council of the Three Halls sat at the far end on three high chairs.
The hall heads were old, grey and heavy-robed, and none of them looked at Yanzhi for longer than a blink.
The Warden stood to their right with his hands folded and his jade bell at his belt, and the bell hung silent as a stone.
It had not rung once since Yanzhi walked in.
He touched the bead at his throat.
"Sit," whispered the abbot.
He had taken the stool beside Yanzhi's at the foot of the hall.
He held a cup of tea.
Jingmo stood alone in the middle of the black floor.
He wore clean grey robes, and his hands were freshly wrapped, and he had not looked at Yanzhi since the door.
That was how Yanzhi knew it would be bad.
"We are here," said the oldest hall head, "to hear the charge laid by Warden Bian."
